Jeremy Edwards – Chairman
Jeremy Edwards has extensive international business experience, having spent 19 years working overseas, including 16 years in Japan. Much of his career was with Honda, where he held senior responsibilities for operations across Europe and Africa.
His work increasingly focused on renewable energy, particularly the use of sustainable fuels and waste materials to generate heat and power. He worked closely with major European energy companies and government bodies and has run his own renewable energy consultancy since 2013.
Jeremy moved to Salisbury in 2013. As Chairman of the Society, he brings considerable experience of managing complex projects, working with different organisations and balancing practical needs with environmental considerations.
He walks through The Close most days, and recognising its historical and cultural importance, Jeremy is keen not only to help ensure it survives in good condition for the joy of future generations but that the potential of this wonderful space is explored and maximised: “There is much that could be done”, he comments.
Terry Byrne – Treasurer
Terry Byrne spent 38 years in the Civil Service, including 20 years overseas in the Diplomatic Service. He then worked for 15 years as an adviser to a House of Commons select committee. He has extensive experience of public administration, policy and parliamentary affairs and so brings to the Society a broad understanding of public policy.
Since retiring in 2017, Terry has maintained a strong interest in the built environment, particularly the protection of historic places and the relationship between buildings and their communities. He is also interested in education policy.
Living in East Harnham, Terry takes a particular interest in preserving the character and heritage of Salisbury. He regards the Cathedral and its Close as critical to that character and heritage.
Liz Slater
Liz Slater has spent much of her career in education policy, including 15 years at the Department for Education. She subsequently established her own consultancy, specialising in education improvement and the development and implementation of policy and strategy.
Alongside her professional career, Liz has a longstanding interest in historic buildings, architecture and landscapes. She lives in the Liberty of the Cathedral Close, where she has undertaken an extensive restoration of a Grade II* listed house.
Her first-hand experience of living in and caring for historic buildings, combined with her background in public policy and strategic planning, gives her a particular appreciation of the challenges involved in protecting the beauty, integrity and tranquility of the Close while ensuring its continued vitality.
Clive Marriott
His ten years working within Salisbury Cathedral Close gave him an extensive knowledge of its buildings, institutions and community. He brings considerable experience in governance, strategic planning, finance and organisational leadership.
Clive is particularly interested in preserving the historic character of the Close while ensuring that it remains a thriving and welcoming place for residents, worshippers, schools and visitors.
Peter Sigler
Having read Modern History at Oxford, Peter has been a practising solicitor since 1975. For a number of years he was a partner in a major London law firm, formerly know as Nabarro Nathanson. Having reached that firm’s retirement age, he became a partner, and remains as such, in Michelmores LLP: most recently he has been head of that firm’s Private Client Department.
Peter’s previous involvement with a Charity was as the Honorary Legal Adviser to the Lord’s Taverners from 2008-2015. Peter lives in the Close.
